Geography

Subject Leader - Mrs L. Greenleaf

Intent

At Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School the children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. We aim to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers; to talk and think like a geographer. Through our currciulum, we aim to build an awareness of how Geography shapes our lives at multiple scales and over time. We hope to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.

Our scheme encourages:

• A strong focus on developing both geographical skills and knowledge.

• Critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions and explain and analyse evidence.

• The development of fieldwork skills across each year group.

• A deep interest and knowledge of pupils’ locality and how it differs from other areas of the world.

• A growing understanding of geographical terms and vocabulary.

The curriculum enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets in the National curriculum.

Implementation

At Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School we use the Kapow Scheme of work to support our implementation of our Geography curriculum. This resource ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum objectives.

The National curriculum organises the geography attainment targets under four strands:

• Locational knowledge

• Place knowledge

• Human and physical geography

• Geographical skills and fieldwork

Our Geography curriculum has a clear progression of skills and knowledge within these four strands across each year group. Our Progression of skills and knowledge shows the skills taught within each year group.

Our enquiry questions form the basis for our units, meaning that pupils gain a solid understanding of geographical knowledge and skills by applying them to answer enquiry questions.

It is important that children develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject. The local area is fully utilised to achieve this outcome with opportunities for learning outside the classroom. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first hand experiences which enhance the children’s understanding of the world beyond the locality.

Our lessons are engaging and accessible to all.

Impact

Our children will have a passion for and commitment to the subject and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.

Children will understand their world, their role and the responsibilities that come with it.
