Intent

At Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School our aim to ensure that all pupils:

• Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
• Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
• Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

We aim to give pupils the opportunity to learn about the products of science so that they can explain the material world and ‘develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena’ (National Curriculum). Pupils will also learn about the practices of science so that they know how scientific knowledge becomes established through scientific enquiry. Through our programme of study, pupils will combine two distinct types of knowledge, substantive and disciplinary, building these with context and purpose.

Implementation

At Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School we use the Kent Scheme of work to support the implementation of our Science curriculum. This resource ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum objectives, enabling pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets.

Knowledge and skills in this scheme of work have been carefully sequenced which builds on knowledge and skills year by year.  Revisiting prior learning and carrying out retrieval practice is an important aspect of learning at Cecil Road and will support pupils to commit their knowledge to their long-term memory.

 

We understand that children learn through first-hand experience, and at Cecil Road we foster these learning opportunities through careful observation and practical experimentation, linking direct practical experience with ideas, knowledge, skills and scientific vocabulary.

Impact

Through our Science teaching at Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School, children will:

• Demonstrate a love of science work and an interest in further study and work in this field
• Retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context.
• Be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
• Be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically using rich language linked to science.
• Demonstrate a high love of mathematical skills through their work, organising, recording and interpreting results.
• Work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
